Murrina, by Mario dei Rossi of a religious building with many porticoes and balconies, sadly I don't know which one.
18mm Diameter, only one available
Mario's initials MdR appear in the 5 o'clock position
The dei Rossis received their first major exposure to US collectors around 2004 and since this murrina is not included in those catalogs I think it must be earleir.
I think bought my collection of dei Rossi murrine, including this one, in the late 1980s or early 1990s
Born in Murano in 1926, Mario dei Rossi had become a master glassmaker by the age of 24. He worked in some of the most famous glass factories of Venice before retiring in 1989 to turn his attention to his long-time fascination with mosaic glass.
He eventually adopted the cold composition, or bundled-cane method, pioneered by Luigi Moretti, for assembling detailed images with thin glass canes.
Once fused, drawn out into a longer, thinner cane, and cooled, slices known as murrine, are cut from the canes.
Mario dei Rossi, who had studied design and painting, challenged himself by "translating" the work of master painters, ancient Egyptian art, the wonders of nature, into glass.
