Tuareg Tcharot pendant, silver with repoussee work and delicate engraving
2.5x2 inches strung with black glass beads and stamped tubular silver beads
Tcharot means "paper" or "message" in the Tuareg language and these amulets usually carry a passage from the Quran or another text intended to bestow benefits and/or ward of danger and negative influences.
These are typically worn by men, either as necklaces or adorning their head coverings called tagelmoust, a type of loose turban & veil combo, ideally of indigo-saturated cloth.
Tuareg women don't veil their faces, but traditionally higher status men did, pulling the lower folds of thetagelmoustup over their noses. They were known as the "Blue men of the desert" for the indigo that rubbed of on their faces
This piece offers three options for stringing or restringing as a single, two-strand or three-strand necklace. The long channel at the top of the pendant is hollow and open at both ends, the short channel currently in use, and finally the loop at the top.
