Medium silver Moroccan Tuareg Iferouane style crosses with alternating layers of ebony and silver at the base, strung with black glass beads and silver tubes.
These amulets were once worn by men, passed down from father to son, but today are worn by women as well.
The pendants are believed to provide protection against all kinds of dangers and attract good luck, so they function as both amulets (to ward off evil and danger) and talismans (to attract benefits and good fortune)
The Tuareg are part of the larger cultural/linguistic group called Imazighen (signular Amazigh), the original inhabitants of North Africa. Their myths and history stretch back 9000 years.
Spread over vast areas of the Sahara, Sahel and Moroccan coast, are held together by their language, which has outlasted Ancient Greek, Phoenician, Latin, and all the other languages of the ancient Mediterranean. It is finally being officially recognized in Morocco and its alphabetTifinaghis starting to appear on street signs along with Arabic and/or French
Personally, I found the Imazighen (aka Berbers) to be charming, creative, kind to animals and strangers, great cooks, musicians, and generally wonderful people, can't wait to go back to Morocco to learn (and shop) more.
