In this ingenious little amulet case the loop at the top is also the hinge that connects the back to the front. Lift gently at the bottom of back and it will swing up and open. There's also an auspicious inscription on the back of the box.
This pendant shows just how well the Tibetan Gau amulet has been adopted by Hindus in the Himalayan region. The amulet box concept as a form of protection against the wild natural forces of the Himalayas originated in Tibet among Buddhists, but here it's transformed into a version featuring Ganesh, a beloved Hindu deity, known as the "remover of obstacles". Ganesh is also like a "patron saint" to writers and intellectuals, is invoked to bless all kinds of new beginnings and generally confers good health, and good fortune, and is favorite in all my extended family's households :)
