  • A small handful of powderglass beads from the 1970s and 1980s when vertical lines started being added to horizontal lines.
  • The latter are formed by simply layering different colors of glass into the mold
  • Vertical lines required another step: a thin, small twig or toothpick would be inserted around the edges of the mold. It would push some of the original glass out of the way. Then a different color of glass was carefully sifted into the small holes. When the beads were fused these would appear as vertical stripes
  • I call these Level 2 powderglass beads and I did witness this process being done in the early 1970s in Ghana. Spots also started appearing on powderglass beads at this time, but I didn't see that being done. I can only guess that small bits of a different color were place near the edges of the molds as they were being filled with single color glass.
