The ultimate collector set of Fulani "Wedding Beads"
111 perfect beads on a 36-inch strand that I put together using only the most unusual beads: striped, "agate", "pearl" other special finishes, shapes and colors. Here's the story...
Last summer I finally opened a few boxes that had been stashed in my basement since I moved into my house 23 years ago. To my surprise I found a huge forgotten stash of beads inside! There were some amazing chevrons, marble beads, contemporary glass, metal and other special beads, but this might be the most unusual strand because it was compiled of the best beads from the hundreds of strands of wedding beads that went through my hands in the 1989s. I hope it finds a good home!
See AFT-184, AFT-215 and AFT-216 for some other special wedding bead strands from the "basement hoard"
Made in Bohemia (now Czech Republic) during the 1800s to early 1900s
Traded to Africa where they became especially popular among the Fulani of Mali.
I've heard two stories about why they are called Wedding beads: a) they are passed from mother to daughter at the latter's marriage, b) they are worn by drummers who perform at Fulani weddings.
