Amethyst is found in India, Bolivia, Brazil, Russia, many parts of Africa and North America.
Neolithic European used it, as did the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans and more recently has been regarded as a stone of royalty, used in crowns, scepters, and the rings of bishops.
The Greeks thought it could prevent drunkenness, today it's lauded for its capacity for curbing over-indulgence and giving up bad habits. It's also said to be able to clear the energy field of negative influences and attachments and helping one move to higher states of consciousness.
Amethyst has won particular fame for enhancing physical environments with the placement of amethyst crystals around the house or garden.
