Silver pendant with diamond shaped carnelian stone surrounded by engraved images of fish 45x35mm
This is from a workshop of Turkoman craftsmen in Afghanistan who make traditional Turkoman jewelry as well as pieces that include inspiration from the culture where they live.
At first I thought fish were an unlikely symbol for the rather dry terrain where the nomadic Turkoman traditionally roamed or much of Afghanistan. However, it turns out that among the Turkoman fish are a symbol for male fertility.
