A symbol for strength, courage and the ability to foresee the future, the jaguar appears as statues and/or paintings on many ancient Maya structures.
Balam, the word for jaguar in at least one Maya language, is also an important animal in Maya cosmology. Related to both the sun and the night, the jaguar was believed to be able to transcend the barrier between the living and the dead.
