Marcasite is a mineral whose popularity has varied through the ages, Cleopatra is said to have worn it, ancient Greeks and Incas liked it too. Out of fashion for a while, it enjoyed a strong resurgence during the "Gilded Age" in the late 1800s.
Like silver it tarnishes, so is best stored with anti-tarnish cloths in low humidity if possible.
I store both my silver and marcasite beads in zip lock bags with small strips of anti-tarnish cloth, and ready made necklaces containing silver beads in trays layered with "blankets" of anti-tarnish cloth - coming to Bead-Zone soon!
