Of Chinese origin, these extra-large, wound cylindrical beads, collected in the 1970’s, were traditionally worn by Nepalis and Tibetans as a less expensive substitute for very valuable, rare, and expensive red coral. Demand for these red beads in the region is due to the color’s auspicious symbolism.
