Murrina sometimes called "Small Bird" at other times "Robin" by Antonio dei Rossi, son of Mario dei Rossi.
24mm Diameter, made in 2004
As well as having two names, this little bird also has two versions: the "slim" and the "rounded" with the former selling for nearly twice the price ($1000 to $1250) of the latter.
This would indicate that, due to the distortion in pulling the cane, there were a lot more chubby than slim birds. All versions were almost sold out by late 2005.
Antonio worked with his father in their workshop in Burano, Italy. They use the bundled-cane method, pioneered by Luigi Moretti, for assembling detailed images with over 1000 thin glass canes.
Once fused, the mosaic cane is drawn out into a longer, thinner cane, cooled, and sliced into discs known as murrine
Both father and son studied art and design before turning their skills to glass.
