Fun fact: heating and cooling or rubbing, can electrically charge tourmaline crystals, which will then attract dust particles or bits of paper. Dutch traders of the 1700s who brought tourmalines from Sri Lanka to Europe, used this property to extract ash from their meerschaum pipes!
Today the largest deposits of tourmalines are Brazil, the USA, and Madagascar in addition to Sri Lanka.
