This shape was popular in the ancient world and the matte finish adds to the antique effect of these relatively new Afghan beads
The name comes from Arabic and Latin for “blue stone”
The finest royal blue Lapis comes from the West Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan.
Beloved in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, Greeks and Romans used it as a reward for bravery.
From the Middle Ages until 1828, was used as pigment to produce the rare and expensive “aquamarine” pigment used in Renaissance paintings
It’s the birthstone for Virgo and December
Metaphysical: Lapis is known as the stone for spiritual seekers, and students.
Care: Avoid abrasion, harsh chemicals and ultra-sonic or steam cleaning
Matte beads can benefit from a very, VERY light application of coconut oil, which soaks into the pores of the stone, brightening the color, but unlike other oils is solid at room temp so will not stain clothing - as long as you don't use too much. Soak up excess with paper towels and allow to dry for a few days if nec.
