The name opal comes from the Latin opalus and Sanskrit upala, both mean "precious stone". Popular in early Europe and among the Aztecs, but declined in popularity due to their association with bad luck, but rebounded during the 20th century and it remains very a top seller today.
Each color of opal is credited with different qualities. Blue opals are said to promote a calm and centered mind and facilitate prayer and meditation. It's also reputed to support memory and thus a useful stone for students.
