Gold-tone and gold finish refer to plating over base metal that looks golden, but generally contains no gold. The advantage is that the clasps are very affordable.
Cast metal can't take as much bending as forged metal, so don't try to manipulate these clasps too much. I recommend setting one side to closed so the clasp always stays attached to one side of the necklace and adjusting the other side just to where it slides open easily without having to be changed.
