Sewn to natural cotton backing, the 2” – 2.5 inch shells and 14mm carnelian beads are at least 150 years old, but together represent a universally admired, and timeless, sense of design.
Antique high status round chank shells used in this form were distinctive to the Ao tribe Nagas.
Some tribes heavily regulated the acquisition and use of shells.
Only a woman with wealth, or from a family that merited such special elements, could have worn this piece.
The piece itself was collected in the 1970’s – 1980’s
