TuaregTcharot, silver with repoussee work and delicate engraving, 2x2 inches
Tcharotmeans "paper" or "message" in the Tuareg language and these amulets usually carry a passage from the Quran or another text intended to bestow benefits and/or ward of danger and negative influences.
These amulets/talismans are typically worn by men, either as necklaces or adorning their head coverings called tagelmoust,a type of loose turban & veil combo, ideally of indigo-saturated cloth.
As the second image shows, these were designed to tied to the head with a strip of cloth passing between the back of the amulet and the raised bar at either end.
Here and now they could be worn as hat band adornments, or on a belt, or adapted for jewelry.
For example I've created multi-strand necklaces with these pieces as focals, with tassels of beads extending from the lower bar, and the strands that go around the neck attached to the upper bar. Have fun!
