25-inch strand ofd mostly 10-12mm beads, many pentagonal paddle faceted.
Probably of Dutch origin, from the 1700-1800s from the African trade.
The strand includes two amber beads, 4 dark blue beads and the rest were clear glass, mostly turned purple by exposure to very long term UV radiation (sunlight)
This happens when manganese dioxide, which is used to remove the natural greenish tint of glass, gradually turns a violet color over time. (See also JSD-791)
Collected during the mid-1970s in Mali by Joyce Diamanti, world traveler, bead researcher, writer, editor and educator.
