One large 28mm diameter agate bead, faceted in the German town of Idar-Oberstein for the African trade during the 1800s. The facets have been smoothed a bit with time, but the bead is in perfect shape, no chips or cracks
The town had been mining and cutting agates and jaspers for over 100 years before they discovered the lucrative African and Middle Eastern markets. Soon they were importing stones from Brazil and other far off places to cut and polish for export.
